January 2008 Monthly meetings were held with all Payback Records Artists and Nathan Lovett-Murray to plan for the next two years. In the meetings we discussed music, videos, tours, showcases, cd ’ s, community partnerships, entertainment, recordings, studio, workshops, artist development, international cultural exchanges, marketing, distribution, sound and lighting equipment and the main aim was to promote our music our culture our stories to the rest of the world. It was decided that we would make Payback Records a self supporting record label for up and coming indigenous rappers to give them a pathway into the music industry and for there music to be heard.
September 22 nd - October 5 th 2008 Legendary Hip Hop artists 2pac ’ s OUTLAWZ visit Melbourne for two weeks and spend time mentoring Payback Records Artist recording music, videos and performing at the Payback Records Label Launch. All recordings and videos were done at the Indigital centre in Carlton with the help and support of Fraynework.
October 4 th 2008 Payback Records Label Launch at Oktobar in Thornbury. All Payback Records Artist perform, Sean Choolburra is the host on the night and One Fire Dance Group entertain the crowd with traditional aboriginal dance. 400 people attend the night with the majority being Indigenous. The OUTLAWZ also performed on the night.
October 20 th 2008 Payback Records Mixtape (Promotional CD) featuring all Payback Records Artists is released and you can download for free on our website www.paybackrecords.com.au. The CD has been downloaded 20,000 times and the website has over 100,000 hits.
October 28 th 2008 Payback Records hosted The Official Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Bone Thugs and Harmony After Party at QBH Southbank with all Payback Records Artists performing with local support from New Zealand Maori Hip Hop Group and the One Fire Dance Group performing traditional aboriginal dance. 1000 people attend to make it a great night.
February 14 th 28 th March 7 th 21 st 2009 Payback Records presents Blackout Hip Hop Nights at Oktobar Thornbury. All Payback Records Artist perform with support from NSW indigenous rappers Konnect A Dot and M.C Wire, South Australian rappers Karnage and Darkniss and a group from New Zealand called Potheads come over and perform at the Blackout events. Nikki Ashby entertains the crowd with Hip Hop dancing. The Blackout nights were set up to give artists a regular spot to perform and for the local indigenous community a regular spot to go to for entertainment. The Blackout events happened every fortnight for two months we would get 200 people on average attending
4 th July 2009 Payback Records CD-DVD Launch for Mr Morgz. After being released from prison in March Mr Morgz finishes his CD Life on the Run and launches the CD at The Aboriginal Advancement League. This is the first official CD from Payback Records featuring all Payback Records Artists and in the CD is a DVD footage from the Record Label Launch and a 20 minute documentary directed by James Wade interviewing Payback Records Artists. It is a drug and alcohol free night for all ages and 150 people attend the night. The CD was funded by the police youth foundation CEO Andy Walsh and the CD launch was funded by the Department of Justice Indigenous Unit CEO Andrew Jackomas.
10 th July Mr Morgz video Put It Down directed by Brendan Hay is featured on ABC Rage and You Tube.
12 th July Payback Records signs a distribution deal with Amphead music meaning they will distrubute Mr Morgz CD to all CD shops around the country and to also sell the music from Itunes.
18 th July 2009 Payback Records CD-DVD Launch for Mr Morgz at Oktobar. This event is in partnership with The Last Kinnection Hip Hop group from NSW who performed on the night as part of their national tour with support from rapper Impossible Odds from QLD. The tour was funded by Triple J radio station. 250 people attended this night.
7 th August 2009 Mr Morgz support act for American rapper The Game at Festival Hall 4000 people at the concert.
13-15 th August, 20-22 nd August, 27-28 th August 2009 Mr Morgz supports The Last Kinection on their national tour, performing in Perth, Alice Springs, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Sydney and Newcastle. On average 150 people attend these shows.
19 th August 2009 All Payback Records artists are invited to the first ever Aboriginal Hip hop and RnB awards in Sydney. Tjimba and The Yung Warriors win Best new talent and DJ Deadly wins Best DJ award.
20 th August 2009 Tjimba and The Yung Warriors nominated for a Deadly Award Best hip hop act.
